The rumor mill is again abuzz with the possibility of Cavs management trading its remaining—and main—superstar Kevin Love. After all, this makes sense if the team is keen on rebuilding via its great number of young talent, previously relegated to supporting cast for LeBron James.
While management made it clear in previous instances that it doesn’t intend to trade Love, there are still high chances of this happening, especially given the wild player movements at the beginning of free agency. For example, the team already owe the Hawks its top-10-protected pick in next year’s draft. This makes the chances of landing another good player after Collin Sexton very slim next year.
Some analysts are saying that a Love-Carmelo Anthony trade is sound, given the way the Cavs currently conduct its offense. Even though Anthony is getting on, he offers good shooting percentage, solid one-on-one offense, and star power. However, he tends to hold the ball too long, like Irving and James. He also offers essentially poor defense. If the team want to diversify from its existing approach, this may not be the right move.

Perhaps the better choice is to trade Love to Portland for either Damian Lillard or C.J. McCollum, which should make the team play much faster while addressing the lack of point guard choices. Sexton is still developing while George Hill is getting older. And Jordan Clarkson is more of a shooting guard. In any case, any full Cavs rebuild will be stymied if Love is still in the roster. But this might be best for now, if only to prove that the team can still reach the playoffs without LeBron.
